From 1st of January 2021, the Swedish Customs will collect trade with the United Kingdom without Northern Ireland through customs declarations. This change requires new country codes in order to be able to separate the collection of trade to Statistics Sweden and the Swedish Customs. For trade with Northern Ireland, country code XI is used.
Northern-Ireland is still part of the EU internal market. Northern-Ireland will be classified as XI. VAT numbers should start with XI following the existing numeric GB VAT number. For GB company codes, check the newly introduced postponed accounting rules (SAP support note 2996657). Businesses that move goods between NI and non-EU countries, make a customs declaration, or get a customs decision in Northern Ireland, will need to get an EORI number with the prefix XI to report the movement of these goods. 2021-04-07 Northern Ireland businesses will have an XI identification number which will enable them to be linked into the EU VAT system when filing INTRASTAT and VIES/EC Sales reports. This number should also be used by Irish businesses selling and dispatching goods to NI registered customers.
